Idukki is the second largest districts, situated in the Western Ghats of Kerala. It was created on 26 January, in the year 1972. It has the least population density. Idukki is blessed with vast forest reserve area and almost half of the district is covered by lush green forests. The rural areas of Idukki are less populated than the urban areas.
Idukki is known for its geographical beauty, mountainous hills and dense Forests. Idukki is associated with Power Generation within the state and about 66% of power come from its Hydroelectric Power Projects. It is a landlocked district, enriched with nature and the valleys are surrounded by three major rivers such as Periyar, Thodupuzhayar, Thalayar and their tributaries. Idukki has the origin of River Pamba.
