Currency and Card in Tibet

When in Tibet it is definitely a big question which card to use. Money and transactions are as vital as foos and commutation in a foreign land. So, here it is.

While in Tibet, it is a good idea to use Chinese Yuan “RMB”. While exchaniging money can be a hassle, its good to carry Yaun instead of dollars or Euros. However, if you wish there is Bank of China wherein you can exchange foreign currency and traveller’s cheques. Other places where money exchange is done are Shigatse, Zhangmu and Purang. When you exchanging money, its a good idea to keep smaller denominations rather than big ones like 100 RMB or 50 RMB.

So, opt for something like 0.1, 0.5 RMB, , 1, 2 or 5 Mao especially while shopping.

Credit Cards

Credit Cards are generally very useful, especially while making payment in hotels and restaurants. Local hotels in Lahasa city do accept international credit cards, but not without charges. Generally they charge 3 – 4 % extra as bank charge. If you need credit cash advances, then Bank of China is the only bank around which offers card advances. You can take an advance of around 2000 cash RMB at one go.
